The Scotch, walked into

  1. 1. e4 King’s pawn
  2. 1… e5 The same claim
  3. 2. Nf3 The knight to f3
  4. 2… Nc6 Defended, with the knight
  5. 3. d4 d4 — the Scotch White’s opening all tournament, which is what makes it preparable. An amateur who always plays the same first four moves has told his opponent’s coach where the game will start.
  6. 3… exd4 The pawn is taken
  7. 4. Nxd4 The knight recaptures Standard, and it puts the knight on d4 — a square that is about to matter for a reason nothing to do with the knight.
  8. 4… Bc5 Bc5, at the knight And through it. The diagonal runs c5–d4–e3–f2, and f2 is the square only White’s king defends. The knight on d4 is the wall in the middle of it.

Three attackers, two defenders

  1. 5. c3 c3, propping the knight The natural move, and it is about the knight. Nobody has said anything about the diagonal yet.
  2. 5… Qf6 Qf6 — the prepared move A third attacker on d4 against two defenders, so the knight is lost. But the knight is also the only thing standing between the bishop and f2, and the queen has just arrived on the f-file.
  3. 6. Nxc6 The trade — and the wall goes It wins a knight. It also moves the piece blocking the diagonal, which is the whole point of the position. 6.Be3 held everything: a third defender for d4, standing in the bishop’s way, in one move.
  4. 6… Qxf2# Checkmate, in six The queen takes the pawn the king was guarding by himself, and the bishop on c5 holds her there. She covers e2 and d2 along the second rank; d1 is White’s own queen and f1 his own bishop. Scholar’s Mate, reversed, on stream.
